Model 100 Product History.
In 1973 the New York City Board of Corrections, in its report cited "malfunctioning inmate-visitor communications as a source of inmate unrest". After reading this, Paul Ginsberg, President, Professional Audio Laboratories, Inc. undertook a study on behalf of New York City, and found that the N.Y.C. jails had old, metal, mal-functioning "submarine" sound-powered style telephones on cords that could be ripped out and used as weapons. The "functioning" units were faint, at best. Professional Audio Laboratories offered to equip one row of 17 pairs of new, efficient, sealed telephones, complete with armored cables. This row of phones, needless to say, became the favorite row for inmates and visitors who, for the first time, could converse with each in a normal tone, instead of screaming at each other and becoming frustrated with the system. The Model 100 was born. From there we expanded to other local jails, state insitutions, and the Federal correctional facility on West street in New York City. Ultimately one institution in California installed a visiting area with 222 pairs of Model 100 phones.
THE MODEL 100-A SYSTEM - The system consists of an inmate handset, with security fittings and armored cable, a visitor handset with security fittings and armored cable, a splitter-isolation network to which both handsets are connected, and a power supply that can power up to 20 conversation pairs. Hanger brackets are used to hang the handsets when not in use.
The handsets are state-of-the-art, using electret condensor microphone elements for crisp, clear communications, and are hearing-aid compatible. The armored cable, the heaviest available, is secured to the handsets using a special security grommet, to prevent contraband passage. The transmitter and receiver caps are sealed to prevent vandalism. And the elements are tamper-resistant.
Voltage is a safe and low 3 volts, and an entire row of 20 conversation pairs requires less power than a night light.
INSTALLATION - Installation is simple and we supply an easy to follow step-by-step installation and operation manual. The system can be installed by maintenance personnel, trustees, or an electrical contractor. No soldering is required. Spade lugs slide under screws that are loosened using a standard screwdriver.
